Q&A

Q: Why did Michael Weatherly leave his good position as Special Agent Tony DiNozzo in "NCIS"? His new show, "Bull," doesn't take advantage of his acting talents and is very disappointing. Please tell me he's going back to "NCIS" in the near future!

A I'm afraid it's pretty unlikely that Michael Weatherly will return to "NCIS," because many people disagree with you on "Bull" -- it's actually one of the big success stories of the new season.

As for why Weatherly chose to quit his cushy "NCIS" job, he put it pretty succinctly at this summer's Television Critics Association press tour: "Sometimes a change is as good as a rest," adding, "I wasn't burnt out, but I was ready for a new challenge."

Elsewhere, he admitted it was a daring move. "I was realistic enough to know that initially no one would believe that I was leaving," Weatherly said in an interview with TheWrap.com. "Because what maniac would leave the No. 1 show in the world in total viewers? But I am that maniac."

But the move seems to have paid off. He went from being a supporting man in a hit show to being the leading man, and title character, in another hit show.

"Bull" was one of the first freshman shows to get a full-season order this year, and seems likely to get a second-season renewal soon. It's been the most-watched new show so far this fall, and though it isn't drawing quite as many viewers as "NCIS" (which airs just before it on Tuesdays), it's outperforming "NCIS: New Orleans" (which airs right afterwards).

All this is to say that Weatherly is unlikely to go begging for his old job any time soon.
